Always the most artistically minded of the nü-metal torchbearers, this Cali-bred quintet push the envelope even further on this disc, which suggests Sonic Youth as often as it does Slayer. Frontman Chino Moreno sets the tone with disjointed lyrics, alternately creepy and compelling, that reach well beyond the usual tales of post-adolescent angst. "When Girls Telephone Boys" fuses sexual tension with semiotics-class brow-furrowing, while "Good Morning Beautiful" is an unabashed celebration of sensuality, as opposed to raw sexuality. The Deftones don't survive on words alone, though: Guitarist Stephen Carpenter is as prone to toss off an ether-dappled series of riffs (as on "Minerva") as he is to put the pedal to the metal. Further sonic depth is added by the sequencer strata laid down by Frank Delgado, who's moved well beyond the embryonic turntable scratching he brought to the band's earlier albums. Delgado's contributions send "Lucky You" spiraling into more psychedelic reaches and fix "Death Blow" in an undulating sea of gelatinous sound waves. If that makes Deftones sound like art, it is -- but it's art as a contact sport.
